Privacy Policy
Effective June 14, 2026 · Last updated June 14, 2026
Burnie (“Burnie,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is a nutrition and calorie-tracking app. This policy explains what data the app handles, why, who processes it on our behalf, and the choices you have. We've written it to match exactly how the app actually behaves.
The short version
- We collect the account details you sign in with and the profile you build (your body stats and goals). That's it.
- We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising, marketing, or tracking. Burnie contains no ad networks and no third-party analytics SDKs.
- The meal photos and descriptions you submit are sent for AI analysis and are not stored by us or by the AI provider.
- You can delete your account and its data at any time from inside the app.
Data we collect
We “collect” data only when it is stored beyond the moment needed to serve your request. By that standard, Burnie collects the following, all linked to your account and all used solely to make the app work:
| Data | What it is | Why we have it |
|---|---|---|
| Email address | Provided by Sign in with Apple or Google when you create your account | To create and secure your account |
| Name | Provided by Sign in with Apple (if you choose to share it) | To personalize your profile |
| User identifier | An account ID generated by our backend | To associate your profile and data with your account |
| Health data | The weight, height, age, and biological sex you enter (weight can also be synced from Apple Health) | To calculate your energy needs |
| Fitness data | Your activity level and your calorie and macronutrient goals | To set and track your daily targets |
We do not collect contacts, precise location, browsing history, advertising identifiers, or device fingerprints.
Data we deliberately do not store
When you log a meal by photo or text description, that image or text is sent to our food-analysis service, used in real time to identify the food, and then discarded. We do not save your meal photos or descriptions on our servers, and our AI provider operates under a zero-data-retention agreement and does not use your submissions to train its models. Your resulting meal log is stored on your device (and in Apple Health, if you enable that) — not on our servers.
How we use your data
We use the data above only to provide the app's core functionality:
- Authenticate you and keep your account secure.
- Calculate your daily calorie and macronutrient targets from your profile.
- Sync your profile so it's consistent across your devices.
- Identify foods from the descriptions and photos you submit.
We do not use your data for advertising, marketing, profiling for ads, or any form of cross-app or cross-service tracking.
Apple Health (HealthKit)
With your permission, Burnie integrates with Apple Health:
- Reads your body weight and active energy (calories burned) to keep your goals accurate.
- Writes the meals, water, and weight you log so your data stays in one place.
We never use Health data for advertising or marketing, never sell it, and never use it for data mining or any purpose other than providing Burnie's nutrition and fitness features. Health data is shared only with our backend processor (see below) for the sole purpose of syncing your profile to your account, and only with your consent. You can revoke Burnie's Health access at any time in the iOS Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices.
Service providers (sub-processors)
We use a small number of providers that process data on our behalf. We do not authorize them to use your data for their own purposes.
| Provider | Purpose | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Account authentication, database, and profile sync | Your email, name, account ID, and profile (health & fitness data) |
| Perplexity | AI food analysis | Your meal descriptions and photos, transiently — not retained or used for training |
| Apple | Sign in with Apple, Apple Health | Authentication tokens; Health data you authorize |
| Open Food Facts | Barcode product lookup | The product barcode you scan (no personal data) |
Data retention and deletion
We keep your account data for as long as your account exists. You can delete everything at any time:
- In the app, go to Settings → Delete Account.
- This permanently removes your profile and account data from our backend and signs you out. Where you signed in with Apple, the associated sign-in token is revoked.
- Data stored locally on your device and in Apple Health is governed by iOS; deleting the app removes its local data, and you can remove Health entries in the Health app.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the EU/UK GDPR or the California CCPA), you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, and to object to or restrict its processing. Burnie's in-app Delete Account flow lets you exercise deletion directly. For any other request, contact us at the address below and we will respond within the time required by applicable law. We do not sell personal information.
Children's privacy
Burnie is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.
Data security
Data in transit is protected with TLS/HTTPS. Account and profile data is stored on our backend provider's managed infrastructure with access restricted to what is needed to operate the app. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.
International transfers
Your data may be processed on servers located outside your country. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for such transfers.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. If we begin storing additional data — for example, saving your meal descriptions to your account — we will update this policy, our App Store privacy labels, and the in-app disclosures before that change ships.
